Issues

Priority Issues

  • Supporting increased efforts in stormwater management and erosion and sediment control
  • Increasing involvement of residents in addressing drainage and erosion issues on their properties
  • Expanding the availability of community gardens
  • Promoting gardening in food-insecure parts of the county
  • Providing more raised beds so that persons with mobility issues can more easily garden

Outreach

I see opportunities for increasing outreach so residents are more aware of (1) the work the SWCD performs to address conservation issues in the county and (2) the services SWCD provides to residents to help them address problems on their residential property.

Residents are largely unaware of the following assistance and resources:

  • Technical advice regarding drainage and erosion issues, and the availability of cost-share programs for addressing these issues
  • Information on using rain barrels, developing rain gardens, and planting native species to help control flooding and erosion
  • Virtual and in-person tours of sustainable gardens
  • Workshops on building your own rain barrel and on building a composter
